Diese hohen Anforderungen faßte der Göttinger Oberbibliothekar Johann Matthias Gesner († 1761) in seiner Denkschrift »Wie ein Bibliothecarius beschaffen sein müsse« (1748) zusammen. An charakterlichen Vorzügen verlangte Gesner vom Bibliothekar ein edles, großmütiges und über die Gewinnsucht erhabenes Herz, das fähig ist, den Nutzen der Bibliothek über den eigenen Vorteil zu stellen, Leutseligkeit und Dienstfertigkeit den Benützern gegenüber sowie Sinn für Schönheit, Ordnung und Reinlichkeit. Die fachliche Qualifikation bestand für Gesner in der Beherrschung eines enormen Wissensstoffes. Der Bibliothekar mußte eine sichere Bücherkenntnis besitzen, wozu wiederum Voraussetzung war, daß Lateinisch, Griechisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Englisch vollkommen beherrschte, Hebräisch und die übrigen biblisch-orientalischen Sprachen sowie Spanisch und die nordischen Sprachen verstand und sich in den deutschen Mundarten, im Mittellatein und in den osteuropäischen Sprachen auskannte. Doch die »eigentliche Wissenschaft des Bibliothecarii« war für ihn die Geschichte der Gelehrsamkeit, die Literärgeschichte. Er erwartete aber vom Bibliothekar auch, daß dieser nicht nur die repräsentativen Namen und Werktitel mit Angabe der besten Ausgaben kenne, sondern auch konkrete stoffliche Kenntnisse aus allen Wissensgebieten aufweise.
